A head-on collision of two passenger trains occurred in southeastern Germany on Tuesday, with at least nine people killed and over 150 sustaining injuries, local police said.

The collision, which involved two Meridian passenger trains, occurred in Bavaria, the town of Bad Aibling, about 25 miles southeast of Munich, according to police spokesman Juergen Thal Meier, cited by the rosenheim24 news portal.

At least nine people have died in the collision, according to Upper Bavaria South Police.

The death toll has risen to 9

Two drivers and both conductors of the Meridian passenger trains are among those dead, the Bayerischer Rundfunk radio reported.

At least 150 people were injured in what the Bavarian interior minister has described as one of the worst rail accidents in Bavaria and in Germany generally.

Police scheduled a press conference on the fatal train crash for 12 pm local time.

The accident took place on the railway line between Rosenheim and Holzkirchen. Several carriages of both trains were derailed, killing "many people" and severely injuring at least 10, with several others sustaining minor injuries.

The reason for the incident is yet unknown, police say.

Police say that at least 12 ambulances and 8 rescue helicopters arrived at the scene. Firefighters are also helping the injured, the spokeswoman for Upper Bavaria South Police added in a conversation with Sputnik.

Media report that police officers were also injured in the incident.

According to the train operator's website, the railway line between Rosenheim and Holzkirchen is blocked, which can result in "other delays."
