A crowd of journalists has gathered at the Ecuadorean embassy in London where WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange resides after a UN panel declared his detention arbitrary Friday.

LONDON (Sputnik) Dozens of journalists have gathered outside the embassy. A police vehicle arrived at the scene at around 09:55 GMT.

Earlier in the day, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) announced it considered Assange’s detention by the United Kingdom and Sweden arbitrary. Both countries announced they did not agree with the ruling, while London confirmed it would arrest Assange should he leave the building.

Assange has been residing at the Ecuadorian Embassy since 2012 out of fear of being extradited, first to Sweden where he has been accused of sexual assault, and ultimately to the United States where he could face espionage charges for publishing classified documents through his website.

On September 12, 2014, Assange submitted a complaint against London and Stockholm to WGAD.
