BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – Belgian Transport Minister Jacqueline Galant has asked the government to allocate 58.5 million euros ($63.2 million) to better secure railway stations, local media reported Tuesday.
The money will be used to equip international railway stations with baggage and body scanning systems, Libre Belgique newspaper reported.
According to the minister, security systems in railway terminals in Belgium should be improved due to the risk of terrorist attacks.
The measures come following a failed gun attack on a train traveling from the Netherlands to France in August.
On August 21, 26-year-old Moroccan national Ayoub Khazzani opened fire at Thalys train passengers, injuring three people. The gunman claimed he had intended to rob passengers because he was hungry, but French investigators suspect the attack was inspired by jihadists.
