European Court Rejects Turkey’s Appeal in Anti-Alawi Discrimination Case
STRASBOURG (Sputnik) The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women should be immediately ratified by all members of the Council of Europe, a Spanish lawmaker said Thursday.

"This convention is an international reference text and that convention makes us stronger vis a vis our governments, and that is a convention that only 90 countries so far have ratified within this parliamentary assembly," Carmen Quintanilla said, addressing the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

"If we haven't ratified it yet, we have to do it, because it is an international binding text. The convention which speaks about how we can protect women, protect these crimes from arising, and also help those women who have suffered these attacks," Quintanilla added.

Quintanilla reminded that the first UN conference on women’s rights was held in 1978. The conference claimed that the biggest crime in the world was violence against women, according to the lawmaker.

The UN General Assembly adopted the treaty in 1979.
