France’s port of Calais was closed on Saturday after migrants entered its territory and boarded one of the ferries at the port, local media reported Saturday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the La Voix du Nord newspaper, some 200 migrants entered the port's territory after a demonstration in support of refugees, while 50 of them boarded the ferry named Spirit of Britain.

The newspaper added that port traffic was completely blocked after the incident and police officers was taking measures to cope with the crisis.

Thousands of migrants have been camping out rough for months on the outskirts of Calais. They seek to cross the Channel Tunnel, the terminal of which is located in the port city, or to cross the English Channel by sea and claim asylum in the United Kingdom.

Europe is struggling to find a solution to a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The EU border agency Frontex detected over 1.83 million illegal border crossings in 2015, in contrast to some 283,000 in 2014.
