BEIJING (Sputnik) — Speaking at a conference on EU-China relations in Beijing, Schweisgut lauded China’s role in the efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria, one of the main causes of the huge migrant inflow into Europe.

"To your specific question whether we would like to see more Chinese assistance to dealing specifically with the refugee crisis, my answer is ‘yes’ – financial support and any other support from China would…make an important contribution to alleviating the situation," Hans-Dietmar Schweisgut told reporters.

Europe is struggling to cope with a massive refugee influx, with hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and North Africa. The EU border agency Frontex detected over 1.55 million illegal border crossings in 2015.
