BELGRADE (Sputnik) Serbia will hold snap parliamentary elections this year to reaffirm the country’s course toward the European Union membership, Prime Minister and leader of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) Aleksandar Vucic said Sunday.

"Serbia will not stop with reforms and with its European path," Vucic said at the SNS central committee session.

Vucic acknowledged a social rift in the country impeding the course of reforms, adding that his government needs a full four-year mandate to complete the process by 2020.

He accused opponents of seeking a "split in the bloc by oligarchs, politicians and criminals not interested in the progress of Serbia and any changes."

Previous legislative elections in Serbia took place in March 2014.

April 22 has been touted as a possible date of this year’s polls.

Serbia received official EU candidate status on March 1, 2012. The European Council announced the launch of official negotiations January 2014, but the talks have stalled at that time.

Serbian and EU negotiators opened the first two of 35 chapters in mid-December, marking a start toward Belgrade’s accession to the 28-member bloc.
