BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — The list includes Belgian nationals already fighting in Syria, as well as those who were preparing to leave before being stopped by law enforcement, the Sudpresse media group reported.
Earlier this month, the Belgian Interior Ministry announced that it had identified 837 Belgian residents believed to be involved in extremist activity or likely to join extremist groups, the highest such figure in Europe.
According to media reports, Belgian police have opened some 270 investigations into suspected terrorists since the beginning of 2015.
On November 13, a series of terrorist attacks in Paris claimed the lives of 130 people. Daesh, also known as ISIL or the Islamic State terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attacks. A number of the suspects in the attacks are thought to have traveled to Paris from Belgium, according to police. Salah Abdeslam, who is one of the key suspects in the case, reportedly lived in the Brussels district of Molenbeek, which is home to an ethnically diverse population.
Since the attacks in the French capital last month, the Belgian authorities have charged at least eight people in connection to the killings and have put their country on high terror alert.
