According to German Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, the country needs to improve control over the refugee flows.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — Germany needs "relief" in the process of accepting migrants on its territory, German Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said Tuesday.

"Relief [in accepting migrants] is absolutely necessary for Germany," Gabriel said, as quoted by Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily newspaper.

He added that Germany must initiate new protocols to decrease the number of asylum applications received by the country, as well as to improve control over the refugee flows.

Europe is struggling to manage hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa in search of safety and shelter. Many seek to reach wealthy EU states such as Germany.

According to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Germany expects over a million refugees during the course of 2015.
