MOSCOW (Sputnik) – British Prime Minister David Cameron has promised to push for more government support for UK airstrikes against ISIL radicals to be extended from Iraq to Syria.
"Britain will continue to support our allies who are fighting ISIL in Syria. I will continue to make the case for us to do more and to build support in Parliament for the action that I believe is necessary for Britain to take to protect our own security, as part of a determined international strategy," Cameron said in a Friday statement.
The statement was released by the British Foreign Office after the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a France-initiated counter-terrorism resolution, which recognizes ISIL, as well as other radical groups, as a global threat and calls on all UN member-states to redouble their counter-terrorism efforts.
"This is an important moment. Today, the world has united against ISIL. The international community has come together and has resolved to defeat this evil, which threatens people of every country and every religion," Cameron said.
ISIL, a radical Sunni group, has ceased vast areas in Iraq and Syria, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes. The group claimed responsibility for the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris that killed over 120 people.
British citizens are currently evenly split over the potential extension of UK military action against IS to Syria, a BMG Research poll conducted for Evening Standard revealed on Wednesday.
