At least seven children died as four boats carrying refugees capsized in the Aegean Sea near the Greek coast, media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) The migrants in the vessels were en route from Turkey to the Greek island of Lesbos, when the tragedy happened, according to media reports.

Three adults were also the victims of the dangerous sea route, news outlets claimed.

More than 200 others were rescued from a single boat, however, dozens of them are still in the water, many suffering hypothermia.

Patrol vessels, fishing boats and even locals on jet skis are currently involved in the ongoing rescue operation.

Nearly 500,000 migrants have arrived in Greece so far this year, with more than half coming to Lesbos, according to EU border agency Frontex.
