MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Some 29,016 undocumented migrants arrived in the European Union in the second quarter of 2015 via the Greek island of Lesbos, located in the north-eastern Aegean Sea, the EU border agency Frontex revealed Wednesday.
“In total, 29 016 irregular migrants have been reported from Lesbos during the reporting period compared to 5 165 in the previous quarter and 2 138 in during the same period of 2014,” the report shows.
Frontex stressed that every fifth undocumented migrant who arrived in the European Union in 2015, reached Lesbos first.
Europe has been beset by a refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing their home countries to escape violence and poverty.
According to the EU border agency Frontex, some 630,000 migrants have arrived in the EU since the beginning of 2015.
