ATHENS (Sputnik) — Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos visited on Wednesday the headquarters of the NATO Allied Command Operations in the Belgian city of Mons with a delegation, becoming the country's first top defense official to do so, the ministry’s press service said in a statement.
During the visit, Kammenos held negotiations with Commander of NATO forces in Europe Philip Breedlove.
“In the course of the talks [between Breedlove and Kammenos] the geopolitical role of Greece in the south-east wing of NATO was marked, the importance of Greece as a stabilizing factor in the region was underlined and the issue of migrants and refugees was discussed in detail,” according to the statement.
During the visit, Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff Evangelos Apostolakis met with Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Petr Pavel.
Greece is one of NATO's 28 member states, having joined the North Atlantic Alliance in 1952.
