Britain to Order Four New Trident Submarines - Cameron

British Prime Minister David Cameron said that British authorities plan to order four new trident submarines.

LONDON (Sputnik) – Great Britain will acquire four new Trident-class submarines for the country’s defense, British Prime Minister David Cameron said Wednesday.

“In the coming years, we’ll be launching the biggest aircraft carriers in our history, a new class of Hunter Killer submarines, new Joint Strike Fighter jets, improved Apache helicopters, a new fleet of drones, and because our independent nuclear deterrent is our ultimate insurance policy, this Government will order four new trident submarines,” Cameron said during a live broadcast Conservative conference.

The prime minister, whose Conservative Party won the general election this spring on a campaign pledge to renew the aging nuclear complex, reiterated his commitment to spend 2 percent of the country’s gross domestic product on defense.

The Trident system is deployed at the UK Royal Navy’s Faslane naval base in Scotland, the United Kingdom’s only facility capable of hosting the four Vanguard-class ballistic missile-equipped submarines.

British Defense Procurement Minister Philip Dunne has said the so-called "main gate" decision on Trident’s successor is expected next year.
