NATO Took Part in Creating Ukraine's Doctrine Labelling Russia as Enemy

Ukrainian Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak stressed that Ukraine’s stance toward the EU and NATO is one of the main priorities of the new country’s military strategy. The document defined Russia as “the main threat” to Ukrainian security.

Experts from NATO countries participated in the creation of a new Ukrainian military doctrine, Ukrainian Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak said on Friday.

"This is the first fundamental document in the history of Ukraine that has been created with the participation of experts from NATO," the official said, speaking at the US-Ukrainian forum in the US Congress.

Among the main priorities of this strategy, Poltorak highlighted Ukraine’s stance towards the EU. Another top priority is the country’s membership in NATO in the future, he said.

The Minister also noted that identification of an enemy was a "third priority" of the revised doctrine. The document stated that "the actual military threat to Ukraine today is the military aggression of Russia, which includes the temporary occupation of Crimea and aggression in some regions of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions."

The decree on the country's new military doctrine was signed by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Thursday.
