The diplomatic spat between Romania and Hungary over Budapest’s decision to build a fence on their shared border to stop migrants flowing in took a new turn on Thursday when Romanian officials condemned the move as “autistic” and “impermissible.”

The move comes as Budapest sealed its Serbian border in response to the refugee crisis sweeping across Europe and then decided to extend the border fence to parts of its border with Romania.

The decision caused an angry uproar in Romania.

In an official statement issued earlier this week Bucharest described the erection of a metal fence between the two neighboring EU-members and “strategic partners” as “unpolitical gesture inconsistent with the spirit of European partnership.”

Prime Minister Victor Ponta denounced Budapest’s action as “shameful” adding that “Hungarian politicians are no better than those in Syria and Libya whose citizens seek refuge abroad.”

“Unfortunately, the Hungarian officials’ behavior has nothing in common with European ideals. Walls, guard dogs, police officers and arms – all this is reminiscent of 1930s Europe,” the Prime Minister said.
