EU Has Moral Duty to Protect Syrian Refugees - EC Official on Migration
BUDAPEST (Sputnik) — Brussels does not approve of the restrictive measures taken by Hungary to bring the refugee influx under control, but it will continue to financially assist Budapest, EU Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos said Thursday.

“Walls are temporary solutions. You have seen yourself that this only serves to divert flows or escalate tensions. Violence is not the solution either,” Avramopoulos said during his visit to Hungary, as quoted in the press release published on the European Commission’s site.

He added that the walls cannot stop the people “fleeing violence and terror.”

“We are ready to help Hungary through other means. We have already allocated almost 7 million euro in emergency funding for Hungary that can be used to increase the reception capacity for asylum seekers,” the commissioner pointed out.

New Clashes Take Place Between Migrants, Police on Hungary-Serbia Border
Hungary is being used as a gateway to wealthier EU countries by hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants. Budapest estimates that over 190,000 migrants have illegally entered the country since the beginning of 2015.

On Tuesday, new legislation came into force in Hungary that imposes prison sentences for crossing the border into the country illegally and for damaging state property, including the 108-mile fence on the country’s southern border with Serbia.
