EU Has Moral Duty to Protect Syrian Refugees - EC Official on Migration
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The European Parliament has voted in favor of relocating some 120,000 refugees who are currently in Italy, Greece, and Hungary, according to a European Commission statement published Thursday.

The emergency voting has been initiated by the parliament's president, Martin Schulz, on Wednesday, due to absolute necessity "to act swiftly" amid the ongoing refugee crisis in the European Union.

“Today, the European Parliament has taken an important step by voting in favour of the Commission's proposal for relocation from Italy, Greece and Hungary of 120,000 people in clear need of international protection,” the statement reads.

The European Commission also asked European Union member states to make the appropriate decisions at an extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting scheduled for September 22.

The previous meeting of the EU interior ministers on Monday failed to agree on the plan to relocate 120,000 refugees throughout the bloc.

Europe is currently struggling with what is being called the worst refugee crisis since World War II. According to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, nearly half a million migrants and asylum seekers were estimated to have entered Europe since the beginning of the year.
