Around 500 Afghan migrants reportedly seized ferry-bridges on Saturday evening attempting to board the Tera Jet ferry to go to the Greek city of Piraeus. The vessel is used by the Greek government for migrant transportation purposes. The Afghans who were attempting to get on the ferry had not passed the necessary registration and identification procedures, according to the media.
"These actions caused the intervention of the police special forces, who fought off the migrants,” the media reported.
The Skai says that four people were injured in the clashes, in which the police had to use stun grenades and tear gas to contain the group.
The clashes between police and migrants have become frequent on the island in recent days.
Greece serves as a transit country for Middle Eastern and North African migrants and refugees fleeing their war-torn home countries in hope to travel further north into the European Union.
