The mayor of the east German town Heidenau has been the recipient of violent threats by neo-Nazis after opening a center for asylum seekers, according to a Sunday interview he conducted with a German newspaper.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — Juergen Opitz, the mayor of a town that saw several days of violent anti-migrant protests last week, told Sonntag Express his wife had found a note with "concrete threats of violence" in the mailbox on Thursday.

"I have an opportunity to protect myself. I’m now going to make use of it," Opitz told the outlet, adding that he was not afraid. "I will continue to speak against racism and press for Heidenau to show solidarity with asylum seekers," he said.

German Town of Heidenau Bans Protests Over Anti-Refugee Violence
A group of far-right extremists clashed last weekend with German police guarding the Heidenau refugee center.

Germany is preparing to accept approximately 800,000 refugees by the end of the year as part of an EU initiative to shelter immigrants arriving in the 28-nation union in the tens-of-thousands since early 2015.
