MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The European policy regarding the migration issues failed, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico said Saturday.
"European policies in the issues related to illegal migration absolutely did not work," Fico said in a televised statement.
He said that fear regarding the current migration situation was spreading not only in Slovakia, but in Europe as well.
"We cannot pretend that we cannot see the reason behind this occurrence, and that we can solve the issue by welcoming all refugees without considering whether they’re economic profiteers or people who really need help," Fico said.
The European Union is currently grappling with a major refugee crisis, with thousands of migrants attempting to reach EU member states through various routes, mainly by crossing the Mediterranean.
Earlier this month, Slovakia announced that it would admit 200 Syrian asylum seekers on condition that they were all Christians.
