MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Almost 20 Romanians were detained in the last two days on suspicion of smuggling undocumented migrants across the Hungarian border, Czech media reported Saturday.
According to the Novinky portal, citing sources in Budapest, 18 people were detained in Hungary. Not one of them sought consular aid, according to the media outlet.
One of those detained was involved in Friday’s lorry accident, and was transporting 18 Syrian refugees.
The Romanian Embassy in Budapest is said to be actively working with Hungarian authorities. If those detained are convicted, they may be sent back to their home country to serve prison sentences.
The European Union is struggling to cope with an unprecedented influx of migrants who flee conflict-torn and poverty-stricken countries in the Middle East, North and Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as some South Asian nations.
Hungary is currently constructing a 175-kilometer (108 miles) fence along its border with Serbia, with 364 soldiers and 112 public works employees currently involved in the construction.
