German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the country's authorities will the necessary legislative changes in order to improve conditions for hosting refugees arriving in Germany.

BERLIN (Sputnik) – German authorities will introduce amendments to the country’s legislation by October in order to improve conditions for hosting refugees arriving in the country, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday during her visit to the town of Heidenau in eastern Germany.

Last week, Heidenau was hit by anti-migrant protests. More than 30 police officers were reportedly injured in the clashes.

“In September, we will make the necessary legislative changes, because in the face of existing challenges we can not operate as usual, as if we were in a normal situation,” Merkel stated.

The chancellor also condemned the anti-migrant clashes, saying that those “who question the dignity of other people” should not be tolerated, and said that Germany would do everything possible to show that it helps those who are in need.

Europe is currently in the midst of a major migrant crisis, as thousands of migrants flee conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

Last week, German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said up to 800,000 asylum seekers and refugees are expected to arrive in the country by the end of the year, three times as many as in 2014.
