“Why are there so many migrants in Calais? They are not going there to live; they are waiting to move to Britain. The United Kingdom should change its policy or move its border. When we are told: 'don’t let migrants into the tunnel,' we are doing the UK's work, only to then get rebuked by the British who say that our measures are not effective,” Bertrand told iTELE TV channel.
Bertrand added that you do not have to be a geography expert to know that the United Kingdom’s border starts at Dover, not in Calais.
Bertrand recommended moving France’s border if Britain fails to implement adequate measures.
In recent weeks, thousands of migrants have attempted to enter Britain via the Channel Tunnel between the town of Folkestone in southeastern England and France's Coquelles near Calais. Their attempts resulted in the deaths of several migrants and traffic disruptions in the tunnel.
The United Kingdom decided to erect a 1.2-mile fence around the Eurotunnel rail terminal near Calais to prevent undocumented migrants from entering Britain.
