UK Calls Emergency Meeting as Calais Migrant Crisis Deepens
MOSCOW (Sputnik) A number of migrants managed to cross from France to the United Kingdom through the Eurotunnel during the past two nights, UK Home Secretary Theresa May said Wednesday.

The statement followed over 3,500 attempts by migrants to cross from the French port of Calais to the United Kingdom on Monday and Tuesday, according to Eurotunnel.

“Home Secretary says 'a number of people' have been able to make the journey through the Eurotunnel to the UK in the past two nights,” Sky New reported on Twitter.

According to the media, the minister added that “every effort” is being made to build a security fence at Coquelles to minimize the risk of such incidents.

Earlier in July, UK authorities confirmed plans to build a new $11-million 1.2-mile fence at the Eurotunnel site at Coquelles.

The Channel Tunnel is a 31.4-mile rail tunnel between Folkestone, Kent, in the United Kingdom and Coquelles, near Calais, in northern France. According to the French Interior Ministry, Calais currently houses some 3,000 migrants, mainly from North African countries.

Calais experienced several traffic disruptions earlier in July due to a strike by French ferry workers and regular attempts by undocumented migrants to climb into cargo trucks destined for the United Kingdom.
