TBILISI (Sputnik) — Monday, June 15, has been declared a day of mourning in Georgia for those who died in devastating flooding in the capital city of Tbilisi, the country’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said.
"In commemoration of those, who died on June 13-14 due to floods in Tbilisi, June 15 will be declared a day of mourning in Georgia," Garibashvili said at the meeting of Crisis Management Council.
On Saturday evening, a heavy rainstorm hit Tbilisi, damaging power lines and causing multiple roads and buildings to collapse as floodwaters rushed through the capital. The area adjacent to the Kura (Mtkvari) River was flooded.
Georgian authorities set up an emergencies headquarters to deal with the outcomes of the disaster.
According to the Georgian capital’s Mayor Davit Narmania, the death toll from the flood in Tbilisi has reached 12 people so far. However, new reports on the casualties may emerge every single hour.
