A Donetsk-area resident, reportedly an AFP journalist, was wounded following Ukrainian shelling of the city, a local district official said on Sunday. However, the journalist's life is not under threat.

"Alexander Gayuk, who, according to preliminary information, works for France Presse news agency, was wounded in the leg and is now in hospital," Ivan Prikhodko told RIA Novosti news agency.

"The shelling was very intense, I was lucky not to be seriously injured. I have already received first medical assistance. I'll be trying to get out of here," Alexander Gayuk told the Donetsk news agency.

The district administration officials earlier said that the part of the city Alexander lives in, had over the past week, come under repeated artillery fire by Kiev forces which left two people dead, nine injured and around fifty houses destroyed.

The official said that the shelling had intensified every day with two or more barrages registered every twelve hours.

More than 6,000 people have been killed in the conflict in eastern Ukraine since April 2014, when  Kiev launched a military operation against independence supporters who refused to recognize the country’s coup-imposed government.
