Greece Shaken by 5.2-Magnitude Earthquake - US Geological Survey

An earthquake has occurred in Greece, about 82 kilometers (51 miles) northwest of the capital Athens, where strong tremors were felt; the US Geological Survey has stated that it had a magnitude of 5.2.

ATHENS (Sputnik) – The quake hit Greece at about 01:09 GMT on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said adding that the epicenter was located at a depth of 5.8 kilometers (3.6 miles) in the North Euboean Gulf. According to the Richter scale, earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0-5.9 are considered to be moderate and can lead to casualties and cause damage to buildings and infrastructure.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The highest rates of seismicity in the Mediterranean region are found in southern Greece, western Turkey and southern Italy, according to USGS.
