On April 2, a FIFA spokesperson rejected a call by 13 US senators to strip Russia of the honor of hosting the championship in 2018. According to FIFA, boycotting sporting events and policies of isolation are not the most effective ways to solve problems.
On Wednesday, US Senators John McCain and Bob Menendez said in a press release that FIFA should prevent President Sepp Blatter from being elected FIFA head for a fifth term because of his support for Russia hosting the 2018 World Cup.
Despite the calls, Blatter, 79, was reelected on May 29 for a fifth term in office to head the world football's governing body until 2019. The reelection came amid a corruption scandal, with seven FIFA executives being arrested in Switzerland on May 27.
The World Cup is scheduled to be held from June 14 to July 15, 2018 at 12 stadia in 11 Russian cities, including Moscow, Kazan, Sochi and St. Petersburg, among other locations.
