According to some estimates about 750 migrants were on board the vessel when it departed from Libya. Unfortunately, out of those that began the doomed voyage, only 28 people survived with just 24 corpses discovered at the scene.
Sicily prosecutors have launched a homicide investigation into the tragic case, already classified as the Mediterranean's worst maritime disaster in decades. The boat wreckage, discovered by the Italian navy, is expected to shed some light on the tragic incident.
At least 33,000 migrants have reached Italy so far this year using sea routes. On the whole, the country is expecting to receive up to 200,000 people in 2015. According to Italy's Interior Ministry officials the influx of migrants in the country has already created a "very difficult" situation.
