Before traveling to Moscow to attend May 9 celebrations, the UN chief stopped Thursday in Gdansk, Poland to take part in the local celebrations commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.
“The three leaders exchanged views on the continuing conflict in Ukraine. During the meeting, the Secretary-General encouraged the sides to swiftly and fully implement the 'Package of Measures for the Implementation of the Minsk agreements,'” the UN readout said.
The Secretary-General noted the urgent need for a sustainable ceasefire in the Eastern Ukraine, where Kiev is conducting a military operation against the Donbas independence supporters, and stressed necessity to advance the political elements of the Minsk accords.
The Minsk deal was worked out in mid-February by the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany and signed by representatives of Kiev and Donetsk and Luhansk militias.
Apart from a ceasefire, the withdrawal of heavy artillery and prisoner exchange. Besides, Kiev should conduct a constitutional reform to grant the breakaway eastern regions more autonomy.
In April, the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic said Kiev was unwilling to proceed with the reform.
