MADRID (Sputnik) – Searches and seizures in the framework of the Taronja operation, conducted together with the European Police Office (Europol), were held across the country, including Alicante, Barcelona and Gran Canaria's capital Las Palmas, the military force said in a statement.
Approximately 100 firearms and 21,000 rounds of ammunition were confiscated. One of the workshops for repairing weapons is believed to be located in Alicante, while Malaga is thought to be a usual place of arms sale.
The Islamic State has seized vast territories across Syria and Iraq, gaining notoriety for its brutal methods, including mass executions. The group's positions have been targeted by US-led coalition airstrikes since August 2014.
Thousands of foreign nationals have left their homes to fight alongside the militant group. According to recent Europol estimates, as many as 5,000 Europeans have left for the Middle East to join jihadist ranks.
