MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Wikipedia blocked a user account from editing entries on suspicion that it was being used by the chairman of the United Kingdom Conservative Party, Grant Shapps, or someone connected to Shapps, to introduce misleading information to pages of his political opponents.
"[A user called] Contribsx adds a critical paragraph to a (relatively unknown) opposition party member's page. The key fact here is that less than a month previously, Shapps had been criticised by the very same MP!," Wikipedia said listing the reasons why Contribsx is likely to be connected with Shapps.
A separate investigation carried out by The Guardian suggests that a third of edits made by Controibsx were made to correct Shapps' biography page, while the rest contained "unflattering" changes to the pages of senior politicians including UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond.
Wikipedia rules prohibit creating fake online identities "for improper purposes" such as misleading other editors.
