MOSCOW (Sputnik) The founder of France's Front National party Jean-Marie Le Pen will not be running in regional elections amid a row with his daughter, party leader Marine Le Pen.

"No, but I think I was the best candidate for Front National," Le Pen told Le Figaro newspaper Monday when asked whether he was a candidate in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur regional elections.

"If I have to sacrifice this for the future of the movement, I would not be one to cause it harm," Le Pen said.

Jean-Marie Le Pen, 86, has been feuding with his daughter Marine, the current leader of the Front National, after he made comments suggesting that Nazi gas chambers, used to kill Jews in the Holocaust during the Second World War, were "merely a detail in the history."

Marine Le Pen accused her father of inciting racial hatred with his remarks.

Following the comments, the party announced that it would be "most preferable" Jean-Marie Le Pen resigned.

France will hold presidential elections in 2017. Marine Le Pen is expected to make a strong bid in the upcoming vote, as her party was elected second in France's departmental elections.
