France Faces Cleanup Bill After 2,000 Migrants Evicted From Calais Camp

The French government will spend thousands of dollars to clean up an illegal camp in Calais, Northern France after some 2,000 migrants were forced to leave the site.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — French authorities are set to spend thousands of dollars on cleaning up an illegal camp in Calais after some 2,000 migrants were evicted from the site, the Daily Mail reported.

Undocumented migrants spent more than a year living in a sports hall hoping to enter British territory from the French port city, according to the newspaper.

In January, France opened a new $4.5 Jules Ferry camp in Calais, which became the first institution in the city providing shelter for migrants since the closure of the Sangatte refugee camp in 2002.

The Jules Ferry camp is co-funded by the European Union and the French government, according to the Daily Mail.

In 2002, London and Paris reached a deal to shut down the Sangatte camp, which Britain said was a magnet for undocumented migrants. Britain agreed to take more that 1,000 migrants as part of the deal.
