MOSCOW (Sputnik) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel found out that her personal information leaked from the Australian immigration department after the G20 summit from media reports, German government spokesperson said Monday, although the department was supposed to inform her about the problem personally.
“The federal government learned of the leakage from press and does not have its own information,” the government spokesperson told Spiegel.
Personal data, including passport details and visa numbers of Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other world leaders were accidentally sent by the Australian immigration department in an e-mail to the organizing committee of the Asian Cup football championship.
The Australian immigration department did not inform world leaders of the disclosure, although legislation of many countries participating in the G20 summit, including Germany, requires individuals affected by data breaches to be informed.
