German newspaper Bild cited unnamed investigators in the crash case as saying the man had feared losing eyesight, allegedly due to retinal detachment.
The revelation about the man's suspected eye condition added a new detail to the list of his alleged medical problems, after it emerged that Lubitz could have suffered from a severe burnout syndrome and depression.
It is unclear how the 27-year-old's health problems affected his ability to fly a plane, but German investigators said Friday they found a torn-up sick leave note in his home that covered the day of the crash. The Dusseldorf prosecutor said the airline appeared not to know about his condition.
The pilot was due to have an annual health check in July 2015.
