MOSCOW (Sputnik) East England's Bedfordshire police confirmed that smugglers had attempted to send drugs, a knife and a mobile phone using a drone to a high-security Bedford prison, Sky News reported Sunday.

"Both the device and the contents of the package are currently being examined and investigations are ongoing," a Bedfordshire police spokesperson said as quoted by Sky News.

Bedford prison staff spot the drone as it got trapped in barbed wire surrounding the prison.

A drone, or an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a remote-controlled aircraft without a human pilot aboard. Drones are currently used in policing, firefighting, pipeline checks, as well as for the military purposes.

Both, the UK Federal Aviation Authority and the British Airline Pilots Association have warned that drones can be unsafe to use. Given the complexity of the current aerospace system, drones could easily collide with a passenger plane and cause a major incident.

British government earlier said it plans to tighten regulations surrounding drone use.
