"The European Union and the US should have backtracked like Russia did and allowed Ukraine to solve its problems independently. It is a kind of pseudo activity when Europe is stagnating, losing its power, while the US is no longer what it used to be," he said. Klaus also added many European politicians hold the same opinion but are too afraid to voice it fearing criticism.
Earlier, the current President Miloš Zeman was confirmed as one of the few European politicians to attend the May 9 Moscow Victory Day Parade. The ex-president Klaus also commented that there is nothing striking about Zeman's attendance.
"I think that Miloš Zeman is from my generation, for whom the WWII means something,' he said. According to Klaus, it is necessary to respect the role the Soviet Union played in WWII.
During the interview Vaclav Klaus was asked what would he do if he was in Zeman's shoes.
"Whether a politician decides to take part in the celebration or not is a personal decision. When I go to Moscow, Czech media will shout at me for a long time, but if I do not come, I will be ashamed of myself as I backed down due to maintaining my image," the former Czech president added.
