The German city of Wuppertal is bracing for potential clashes between Salafists and the anti-Islam movement Pegida as they plan to hold separate marches in the city later in the day; police are already on high alert, sources said.
More than 1,000 police officers have been deployed in Wuppertal to contain the Salafist march and at least two counter-demonstrations that will reportedly involve about 3,000 people.
In October 2014, riots burst out in the German city of Cologne, where the Hooligans Against Salafists movement staged a rally against those practicing an ultra-conservative form of Sunni Islam.
