MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A number of rough sleepers in England has increased by 14 percent from autumn 2013, and now reaches a total of 2,414 people, the UK Department for Communities and Local Government said in an annual report published Thursday.
“The Autumn 2014 total of street counts and estimates in England was 2,744. This is an increase of 14% from the 2013 figure of 2,414,” the report said.
A total number of people seen rough sleeping in London by outreach workers or building based teams reached 6,508 people. Over half of those people were non-British. Eleven percent of those seen rough sleeping were Romanian, and ten percent Polish.
Rough sleepers are those people who are bedded down or are about to bed down in the open air, including in parks, in tents, on the streets, bus shelters, doorways, and other public places.
