The subject of Russian gas transit through Ukraine to the European Union has been a matter of concern for the bloc in light of the strained relations between Moscow and Kiev and Ukraine's gas debt to Russia.

In June 2014, Gazprom suspended gas supplies to Ukraine due to Kiev's debt that exceeded $5 billion at the time. The company resumed gas deliveries in December after Kiev had paid off part of its debt and agreed to make prepayments for deliveries in future.

On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would suspend gas deliveries to Ukraine once again unless Kiev made a further prepayment.
