Sounds of explosions and artillery fire have been heard across the city in Ukraine's southeast, shelling damaged a number of residential buildings in Donetsk.

DONETSK (Sputnik) — The Kiev troops continue shelling southeastern Ukraine's Donetsk despite a ceasefire deal signed earlier in February, head of the city's Kievsky and Kuybyshevsky districts Ivan Prikhodko told RIA Novosti on Sunday.

The official said that artillery fire had damaged a number of residential buildings and a boiler room.

Local residents told RIA Novosti that sounds of explosions and artillery fire had been heard across the city.

"The fire is not as loud and frequent as in January and early February, but a total silence is out of the question," one of the residents said.

The ceasefire between the Ukrainian government forces and independence militias came in force last Sunday. Over the past week, both sides have accused each other of violating the ceasefire.

Under the truce deal, the warring sides were to start the pullout of heavy artillery from the line of contact in two weeks after the ceasefire establishes. The Kiev forces and independence supporters plan to begin the process on Sunday.
