Thousands took to the streets of Berlin to protest against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, which is under negotiation between the European Union and the United States.

MOSCOW, January 18 (Sputnik) – Thousands of Germans living in Berlin have joined a protest against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which is under negotiation between the European Union and the United States, Die Welt reports.

According to the national German newspaper, organizers of the demonstration claimed that it was attended by around 50 thousand people. Police said 25 thousand took part in the Saturday protest.

Apart from voicing their opposition to the TTIP, participants in the demonstration, organized by farmers' unions and environmental organizations, also protested against genetic engineering used in agriculture and the poor conditions that animals are kept in.

TTIP is currently being negotiated between the European Union and the United States. Should it be signed, it will eliminate trade barriers and alleviate the purchase and sale of goods and services between the European Union and the United States. More than a million people all over the European Union have signed a petition calling for an end of TTIP negotiations.

The Stop TTIP petition was founded by the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI), an alliance of some 300 European organizations. It also urges the European Union not to ratify the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with Canada, signed in September and currently pending approval by the European Parliament.
