MOSCOW, November 23 (Sputnik) – Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will step down as MP at the next general election, the Guardian reported on Sunday.

“Gordon has confirmed to friends that he will stand down at the election in May,” said his ally to the Sunday Mirror, as reported by the Guardian.

Brown entered the House of Commons back in 1983 and is now looking to “go out on a high”, after being credited for helping keep the United Kingdom together, when it seemed like Scotland might vote “Yes” late in the recent referendum campaign, the Independent said.

Brown became Prime Minister in 2007, succeeding Tony Blair. Three years after, however, he was forced to step down as Prime Minister in the wake of the financial crisis, as the Labor Party had their worst defeat in general elections since 1983, the BBC said.

It is suspected that Brown will now focus on charity work as a UN Special Envoy for Global Education, the BBC reported.
