The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing funds to strengthen biofuel production and keep people who work at renewable energy facilities employed, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced in a statement on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The USDA established its Advanced Biofuel Payment Program in 2008. Since then, it has provided $308 million in payments to nearly 400 producers of biofuel in 47 US states and territories.

"The USDA is investing $8.8 million to boost the production of advanced biofuels and sustain jobs at renewable energy facilities in 39 states," the statement said.

The funds will go to biofuel producers based on the amount they can produce from items other than corn, crop residue, food and yard waste, vegetable oil and animal fat, according to the statement.

"Advanced biofuels expand America’s energy options and increase our sources of homegrown, renewable energy," Vilsack noted in the statement.
