Brexit could help improve the ecological situation in the United Kingdom, former UK Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Owen Paterson told Sputnik.

EDINBURGH (Sputnik), Mark Hirst — Potential London's exit from the European Union will be beneficial for the environmental situation in the United Kingdom, as EU legislation sometimes harms the country's ecology, former UK Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Owen Paterson told Sputnik on Friday.

"I believe that Brexit would be safer for Britain in terms of the environment and our ecology because we would improve it… We have a proud record because a lot of the conventions we have established have been distorted to become a pan-European piece of legislation which in some areas has a detrimental impact on us," Paterson said.

He added that in case of Brexit London would be able to adapt its own environment legislation.

The referendum on the UK membership in the European Union will be held on June 23.

Brexit supporters argue that EU membership has eroded Britain’s national sovereignty, while opponents say that leaving the 28-member bloc could impact the country's economy.
