A "potentially historic" winter storm, dubbed as "Snowmageddon" on social media, ended up being less destructive and severe than it was predicted.

NEW YORK, January 27 (Sputnik) — The night-long US Northeast snow storm was less severe than expected in New York, the state Governor said Tuesday.

"The storm was less destructive than predicted," Governor Andrew Cuomo said at a press conference, after reopening roads and advising that public transport services would resume normal service during the day.

Predictions of a "potentially historic" winter storm and phrases such as "Snowmageddon" and "Snowpocalypse" spreading via social media had sent New Yorkers into stores, buying up supplies of canned food and toilet paper for a lengthy stay indoors.

However, the metropolitan area saw only between 20 to 30 centimeters of snow, compared to the meter-high drifts predicted by the weathermen and city planners.

Meteorologists apologized on Tuesday for poor predictions about the storm, which tracked east of New York overnight and dropped about 60 centimeters of snow on Long Island and other areas.
