NEW YORK, December 9 (Sputnik) – The number of people dying from malaria globally fell by 47 percent from 2000-2013 and continues to drop steadily, the UN World Health Organization (WHO) said in a report published Tuesday.
"We can win the fight against malaria," WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said in a statement on the organization's World Malaria Report 2014.
Dr. Chan stressed the health watchdog had "the right tools and our defenses are working". At the same time, she emphasized they "still need to get those tools to a lot more people if we are to make these gains sustainable".
Thanks to better malaria testing and treatment and access to mosquito bed nets, the number of Africans falling victim to the parasite fell from 173 million in 2000 to 128 million in 2013, according to WHO figures from the report.
