China intends to construct up to 50 miles of the gas pipeline on its territory in 2016.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian energy giant Gazprom and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) will start building a cross-border section of a pipeline for the Power of Siberia gas project in June, CNPC Chairman Wang Yilin said.

"The construction of the pipeline [the Power of Siberia] has already started both in Russia and China. In accordance with our schedule, the sides will start the construction of the cross-border section in June this year. We are speaking about an underwater passage across the Amur River," Wang told the Rossiya 24 television channel.

According to Wang, China intends to construct up to 50 miles of the pipeline on its territory in 2016.

In May 2014, Gazprom and CNPC signed a contract for the gas sales via the so-called Eastern route. The contract envisages supplies of Russian gas to China in the amount of 38 billion cubic meters per year for the period of 30 years. The Eastern route is meant for supplies of gas to China through Yakutsk and Irkutsk gas production centers on the main gas pipeline Power of Siberia.
